This recent One Day Restyle took a living room from dark and crowded to light, bright and sophisticated. This service is a great option for clients looking to keep some or most of their existing belongings, but who want to change the overall style of a room. Simply fill out our questionnaire, send us your photos and measurements of the space, and we'll come to you on a specified install date with all the items necessary (and within budget) to complete your restyle.
For this project, the charming Spanish style bungalow belongs to a family of four (including two small children), living on the Westside of Los Angeles. The family was looking to lighten and brighten the room. Besides that, they wanted the room to reflect their love of travel. Mom, Elisha, described their style as classic with a modern flair. They asked us to stay away from anything too feminine and let us know they wanted to see more greens, blues and neutrals - "think Old World map". It is extremely helpful when clients give specific details like these. With the map reference in mind, the ideas immediately started rolling in. The room had a ton of potential and we were instantly inspired by the beautiful fireplace, white walls with contrasting wood beams and the family's particular love of Spain.
The first change we made was with the curtains. The red curtains were darkening the space and giving it a harsh look. We came prepared with sea foam blue curtains that didn't seem quite right either, but luckily, a last minute run to HomeGoods scored us the most perfect shade of green for the room. We raised the curtain rods on the two smaller windows to the same height as the larger window (96"). Notice in the before photos, the rods are hung the same height as the TV. By switching the curtains and bringing the rods up, the room appears larger and the TV appears slightly smaller.
Another change we had prepared for in the room was removing and/or changing several of the furniture pieces. The sofa was to remain, but we had permission to lose some of the other seating. Before, there were too many chairs which overwhelmed the space, making it feel cluttered and small. We pared down to just the sofa and smaller chair. We then switched out the dark leather storage bench with another upholstered in a light, beige fabric.
The coffee table was large and clunky and didn't allow room to move around the space. With two small children in mind, we were asked to find something heavy (i.e. not easily tipped over), free of sharp edges and not made of glass. Thankfully, we found this amazing oval-shaped table that hit all the marks. We love the way the white marble contrasts with the dark brown leather of the sofa, and the brass frame gives a sophisticated look that plays well with other accessories used in the room.
Switching out the throw pillows helped brighten the dark sofa and better complement the curtains and existing rug. Some were purchased in advance, while a few others were thrown in during our last minute "mad grab" at HomeGoods. We pushed the bookshelves together to make them more substantial along the large side wall, giving us a space to put their new storage bench and a small collection of art. We styled the shelves with books belonging to the clients and some fun, travel-inspired accessories. The art includes a Barcelona watercolor print, a Joan Miro reproduction and works inspired by the beach.
We had asked the clients to leave us with any special items they may like to see in the room. We knew they collected postcards, ticket stubs and other memorabilia from their travels, so we brought a shadow box with us to showcase some of these items. Personal touches like this make a room feel like home. In addition, Elisha let us know in advance about a memento that she'd been saving in hopes of having it framed one day. We encouraged her to do this before our install date and we love the way it turned out! Instead of hiding in a closet, this special piece is now on display along the side wall.
By clearing some of the furniture in an overcrowded room and making a few easy style changes, this One Day Restyle was a complete success. The new look of the room feels large and bright, modern and classic. Elements that were almost unnoticeable before, such as the scraped wood window frames and dark wood beams, now have a chance to shine. We are in love with the end result and the clients let us know they were "floored with the way it turned out" adding, they now "feel sophisticated with a grown up living room". Now that's the kind of feedback we live for!
